software issue?

hi, folks!

all of a sudden my BDP-1 and my BDA-1 had a crash today at the same time...it happened never before.
this is what the player's display was showing:

BDP1 000227 ERROR 04
R02.0 2010-10-19. 124

so the questions are:
1) what does this message mean?
2) any idea why the converter turned itself off?

Sounds like you had a brown-out in your home. Error 04 indicates a low mains voltage. This kind of error can be instantaneous. Upon restarting both components, were they fine?

if it was some kind of power failure then why the rest of my system was still working???

Most likely because many of the other components utilize a lot of storage in their power supplies. For instance, amplifiers can store an enormous amount of power in their capacitor banks, so they can withstand small power disruptions more capably than the BDP.
