Scratch disk almost full, but can't set a new scratch disk

Chris, it seems no matter what problem could be had I will eventually run into it. I recently added a bunch of music from my Mac to the usb drive attached to the Pi. After rsync'ing the files, I used the Update function on the Pi. As it was rebuilding the database, I got an error that the scratch disk was almost full (at 94%) and I should set a new one. When I attempted to do so, I received the error "Can not use a system volume as the scratch drive." I get this whether I use a small partition on the external usb drive or if I use a thumb drive plugged into the Pi.

Any help would be appreciated! I coiuld clear the cache, I suppose, but I did add a bunch of artwork to the database and would prefer not to do that if it could be avoided.

Thanks!

Everything seems to be working fine with the new firmware update, which I just installed today. Great work, thanks Chris!
